 Hi All, 

           I want to let everyone who are interested in learning about the latest fishing action in Long Island Sound, and the Connecticut river, that I will be sharing information in this blog to improve your knowledge of the most recent fishing conditions, along with tactics and techniques that we are using aboard the Kingfisher Fishing Charter boat. 

         I am a U.S.C.G. licensed CT fishing charter captain and owner/operator of Kingfisher Fishing Charter the past 22 years. I have been fishing Long Island sound and the surrounding waters for the past 40 years. A life- long fisherman, my extensive experience includes catching inshore local species (Striped Bass, Bluefish, Fluke, Sea Bass, Scup, and Blackfish), offshore species (Tuna, Shark, Marlin, Mahi-Mahi, and Wahoo), and fish from the waters of the Caribbean and Central America (Tarpon, Snook, Sailfish, Grouper, Snapper, Barracuda and many others).

I have been fishing out of Ferry Landing Marina (formerly Between The Bridges Marina) in Old Saybrook, CT for the last 10 years. Previously, I was located in Mystic, CT where I fished the first 12 years running charters and approximately 10 years prior to starting the  business. I have extensive knowledge of all the best fish producing areas from the Watch Hill Reefs in Rhode Island to the Six Mile Reefs in the Clinton, CT area and everywhere in between, especially The Race and Plum Gut. 

My favorite type of fishing has always been targeting larger fish with big live baits. That is why the Kingfisher is one of the few charter boats in CT that specializes in using live bunker and has become known as a top producer of trophy sized Stripers (28 fish over 50lbs.) and monster Bluefish. 

When the season begins I will post fishing reports that are REAL. I will also provide what techniques are most effective and tips on when to fish particular areas as well as weather/tidal conditions. Looking forward to helping anyone that has questions.

Long Island Sound Fishing Report

Got out before the wind started for a quick boat shakedown/Tautog trip for ourselves. Water temp was a chilly 47.6 in the Old Saybrook area of Long Island Sound. The Blackfish bite was a pick with a couple keepers and a few shorts in 15-17ft of water during the 3 hours of effort. Last year during the same time period the Tog bite was on fire compared to this year in the same location, with water temp at 50.6. There is no question that the colder water temperatures this Spring have pushed things back a week or so. Striped Bass activity in the Connecticut river is behind schedule as well due to the colder water. I will be targeting the Race, Plum Gut, and the CT river starting the 2nd week of May. Kingfisher Fishing Charter Long Island Sound fishing Report

   Sunday 5/11/25 I took a ride to The Gut and The Race with my good friend Pete from our home port in the Connecticut River in Old Saybrook, CT to check on the state of the fishery in Eastern LIS. The CT river was a mess with the muddy flood water full of debris including large tree limbs, logs, branches and even a propane tank that could cause big damage to boats and props. Our first stop was Plum Gut (between Orient Point N.Y. and Plum Island) during the beginning of the flood tide. The water temp on our way across the sound was around 55 degrees. We arrived as the tide was just getting moving with only a few birds scouting the area. The plan was to use artificials only (3 wayed plastics and diamond jigs). We made 5-6 drifts in the Gut and decided to head over to the Race due to lack of life.
